Adams, MA

Adams is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsfield, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Adams was first settled in 1734 as part of the town of North Adams. In 1816, when Adams became an independent town, it had only about 100 residents. The town's rapid growth can be attributed to its location on the Boston and Worcester Railroad line (now Amtrak's Northeast Corridor). Adams became a bustling mill town with over 1,000 businesses and 20 churches by 1880. However, the textile industry declined in the early 20th century and by 1970 only about 60 businesses remained.

Since then Adams has experienced a renaissance as a residential community and shopping destination thanks to its proximity to major cities such as Boston and Springfield (30 miles away), its abundance of parks and green spaces (including several state forests), and its well-educated population (over 50% of adults have at least a bachelor's degree). As a result of these changes, Adams' population has grown steadily since 1990 reaching 21,812 by 2010.
