Holliston is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. Holliston is known for its well-maintained neighborhoods and its proximity to Boston.
The first Europeans to settle in what would become Holliston were the Pilgrims who landed on Cape Cod in 1620. The town was officially founded in 1727 by Ebenezer Richardson and other Puritans from Rowley, Massachusetts. The town's name comes from the family of Colonel John Hollis (1660-1725), an early settler and landowner who served as Deputy Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay and as a member of the General Court (the colonial legislature).
In 1892, a group of businessmen led by William Frawley purchased land in Holliston to build what would become Frawley Park, one of the earliest planned communities in America. At its peak, Frawley Park had more than 1,000 homes and boasted a golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool and clubhouse. In recent years, however, many of these facilities have been closed or converted into private residences.
Today Holliston is home to several well-maintained neighborhoods that are popular with families looking for close proximity to Boston but without the high cost associated with city living. Some notable neighborhoods include Pinehurst Village (which features large lots and mature trees), Mill Pond Estates (a collection of Tudor Revival homes), Willow Glen (a mix of single-family homes and condominiums) and Heritage Hill (a historic district featuring stately colonial homes).
The town also has a number of commercial districts including downtown Holliston (home to several restaurants and shops), North Main Street (which features boutiques and galleries)and South Main Street(which includes a variety of businesses including banks, pharmacies and law firms).
Holliston is also home to two major parks: Frawley Parkand Heritage Hill Park. Both parks offer ample space for playing sports or taking walks along winding paths lined with beautiful gardens
