Huntington, MA

Huntington is a city located in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,917. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The city is named after John Huntington, an early settler and businessman.

Huntington was first settled in 1636 as part of Charlestown by John Winthrop and his followers who were fleeing religious persecution in England. The area that would become Huntington was then known as Muddy River Plantation and consisted of about . In 1641, the name was changed to Charlestown West because it lay west of the original settlement at Charlestown. In 1648, Charles II granted Winthrop and others permission to settle an additional on what is now Beacon Hill. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1700 it had a population of 1,200.

In 1785, during the American Revolution, General Henry Knox led an attack on British forces occupying Boston which took place near what is now downtown Huntington. In 1802, President Thomas Jefferson appointed Samuel Seabury as the first U.S. District Judge for Massachusetts which established federal jurisdiction in the state for the first time.

The Battle of Bunker Hill took place near what is now downtown Huntington on June 17th 1775 during the American Revolution; this battle resulted in British forces being forced to retreat from Boston which helped secure American independence from Great Britain.

During World War II, Huntington served as one of several locations used by the United States Army Air Forces to train pilots for combat missions over Europe; this training program was known as Operation Crossroads and ran from 1942 until 1945.

The opening ceremony for what would become I-495 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) took place near what is now downtown Huntington on September 11th 1955; this event marked one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in Massachusetts at that time and also served as an important symbol of progress for residents living along its route..
