The history of real estate in Millville can be traced back to 1635 when Samuel de Champlain purchased land from the Wampanoag tribe. In 1785, John Adams and his wife Abigail purchased land in what is now known as East Millville. The first mill was built on this property in 1792. In 1827, James Sargent built a sawmill on the banks of the Mystic River which became known as Sargent's Mills. In 1848, Charles Atherton bought Sargent's Mills and began manufacturing cotton goods there. By 1850, Atherton had expanded his business to include a woolen mill and a shoe factory.

In 1853, Atherton sold his mills to George Payson who renamed them Payson Mills after himself. Payson's mills were one of the largest textile factories in New England at that time. The mill complex included a cotton gin, a carding machine shop, a spinning wheel factory, three warehouses and twenty-four houses for workers and their families. In 1865 Payson sold his mills to Isaac Royall who continued manufacturing textiles there until 1907 when he closed down due to competition from overseas manufacturers.

In 1909 Royall sold his mills to Jethro Tulloch who converted them into an automobile plant called Tulloch Motors which manufactured Buicks and Cadillacs until 1922 when it was closed down due to the Great Depression . Tulloch Motors was one of only two automobile plants in Massachusetts at that time (the other being Ford Motor Company's plant in Detroit).

In 1924 Harry Flanders acquired Tulloch Motors and began manufacturing radios there until 1938 when he sold it to RCA Victor Corporation . RCA Victor operated the plant until 1967 when it was closed down due to competition from Japanese manufacturers . During its operation at Tulloch Motors , RCA Victor produced over 100 million radios including models such as the Radio Queen , Radio King , Radio Executive , Radio Ambassador , Radiogram , Admiral model etc..
