Newburyport is a historic town located in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area.
The town was first settled in 1630 as part of Ipswich and was officially incorporated on October 9, 1713. Newburyport's early economy was based on its whaling industry and shipbuilding; however, by the mid-19th century it had become a center for textile manufacturing. In 1892 Newburyport became home to the world's first factory that produced rayon fabric. The textile industry declined in the late 20th century but has since been replaced by high-tech businesses such as information technology and biotechnology.
