The history of real estate in Newton dates back to 1636 when the first land grant in what would become Newton was given to Captain John Mason. In 1642, construction began on the first house in what would become Newton Center. The town of Newton was officially incorporated on October 12th, 1798. The early settlers were primarily farmers who raised livestock and crops. In 1851, a sawmill was built near what is now known as Lincoln Square Park which led to an increase in lumber production and the development of new businesses such as furniture making and shoe manufacturing. By 1870 there were over 100 businesses in Newton Center alone.
