South Barre, MA

South Barre is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts metropolitan area.

The town of South Barre was first settled in 1775 by Ebenezer and Jonathan Brown. The first mill was built on the banks of the Connecticut River in 1792 by Ebenezer Brown and his son-in-law, Asahel Curtis. By 1810 there were twenty mills operating in South Barre; most were powered by waterfalls on the river or streams that flowed through the town. The textile industry thrived in South Barre during this time period; however, with mechanization and competition from other countries, many mills closed down by 1900.

Today, South Barre is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes health care services, retail businesses, and manufacturing companies. Its historic downtown district has been restored and now features boutiques, restaurants and art galleries.
