Topsfield, MA is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Topsfield is home to the Topsfield Fair and the Topsfield Historical Society Museum.

The town of Topsfield was first settled in 1660 by English Puritans who were fleeing religious persecution in England. The town was named after the top of a hill that overlooks it. The first settlers built their homes on the top of the hill and used trails to travel between their homes and businesses. In 1727, a road was built connecting Topsfield to Boston which made transportation and trade much easier for the residents of Topsfield.

In 1812, during the War of 1812, General William Hull led an American invasion force into Massachusetts which resulted in his defeat at the Battle of Lake George near Plattsburgh, New York. As a result of this battle, Hull retreated back into Canada where he was captured by British forces and held as a prisoner until he was exchanged for British prisoners later that year. After his return to Massachusetts, Hull decided to retire from military life and moved to Topsfield where he opened a general store. General Hull is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Topsfield.

During the early 1800s, many mills were built in Topsfield due to its close proximity to Boston which made it an ideal location for these mills. These mills produced textiles such as cotton cloth which were exported all over America and Europe. By 1850, most of these mills had closed down due to technological advances which allowed factories to be built outside of cities which eliminated the need for mill workers in cities like Boston.

Today, most businesses in Topsfield are related either directly or indirectly with agriculture since this is still one of the main sources of income for residents here. There are also several small businesses that provide services such as insurance brokerage or computer repair services which are essential for keeping up with today's technology-driven world
