Auburn Hills is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 38,060 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area.
The city was founded in 1824 and named after Auburn, New York. The first settler in the area was John Ballou who built a cabin on the site that would become Auburn Hills. In 1827, Ballou sold his land to Solomon Sibley who established a flour mill and sawmill on the banks of the river which still operates today as Sibley Flour Mill Museum.
In 1835, General William Henry Harrison purchased of land from Solomon Sibley for $1,000 and began construction of his home " Harrison's Fort" which still stands today as a private residence. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln visited Solon Sibley's flour mill while campaigning for President of the United States and is said to have remarked "This is going to be a great country."
In 1852, Augustus Graham bought out Solon Sibley's interest in what would become known as Graham Land Company which developed much of present day Auburn Hills including what are now Highland Park and Riverview Estates. In 1886 Charles Trowbridge developed Trowbridge Park which stretched from Woodward Avenue south to Eight Mile Road (now M-10).
In 1911 Wirt C Dutton developed Dutton Estate on 8 Mile Road (now M-10) between Woodward Avenue and Harper Woods Boulevard (present day Harper Woods). Dutton Estate became one of Detroit's most prestigious addresses with homes such as The Ambassador Hotel built by Henry Ford next door in 1928.
In 1922 Albert Kahn designed Fox Theatre which opened that year with an inaugural performance by silent film star Lillian Gish starring alongside her then husband Reginald Denny who played Dr Prentice opposite Gish's character Marion Ravenwood in Raiders Of The Lost Ark directed by Steven Spielberg who attended one show while filming nearby at Shepperton Studios outside London England..
Auburn Hills continued its rapid growth throughout the 1920s with new subdivisions being developed such as Willow Run Estates (1925), Brookside Gardens (1926), Glen Oaks (1927), Country Club Estates (1928) and Highland Park Village (1929). By 1930 there were over 20 subdivisions within city limits making it one of America's most prolific real estate development cities at that time..
During World War II many residents left for military service leaving behind vacant homes which were quickly snapped up by returning servicemen eager to get back into civilian life..
The postwar years brought even more growth with new subdivisions such as Northland Terrace/Village Homes(1950), Summit Forest/Country Club Estates(1960), Arbor Trace/Willow Run Heights(1965) and Highlands Ranch/ Riverview Manor(1970). Today there are over 100 subdivisions within city limits making it one of America's most prolific real estate development cities once again..
