Clinton is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 36,814. The city is situated on the Clinton River and is part of Metro Detroit. The economy of Clinton is based largely on its role as a regional transportation hub and its proximity to major metropolitan areas in Michigan and Ohio.

The history of Clinton can be traced back to 1824, when General Henry Atkinson established a military post near what would become Clinton. In 1835, Elijah White established a sawmill near what would become Clinton village; this mill became one of the first businesses in what would later become Clinton Township. By 1850, there were approximately 100 residents living in what would become Clinton; by 1860, this number had increased to 1,000 residents. In 1871, the town was incorporated as a village and was renamed Clinton after former U.S President William McKinley (who was then Governor-General of Canada).

Clinton has experienced significant growth over the past several decades; as of 2010, the city had a population of 36,814 people and an estimated population growth rate of 2%.
