Hanover, MI

Hanover is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 18,824 at the 2010 census. Hanover is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area.

The city was founded in 1825 by General Augustus C. Meigs and named for his home town, Hanover, Germany. The first settler arrived in 1827 and Hanover became an incorporated village in 1837 with a population of about 1,000 people. In 1840 it had 2 stores, 4 churches, 3 schools and a population of 602 people. By 1850 the population had increased to 1,711 and there were 10 stores and 8 churches. The first railroad arrived in Hanover on December 5th, 1863 when the Detroit & Pontiac Railroad laid tracks through town connecting Detroit with Pontiac to the south (now known as Amtrak's Blue Water Bridge). By 1870 there were 20 businesses including two banks and a newspaper called "The Sentinel". In 1890 there were 100 businesses including two hardware stores, three drugstores, four bakeries, three hotels/motels/resorts/restaurants and one brewery which produced " Hanover Beer".

During World War II Hanover was home to Camp Grayling which trained soldiers for combat overseas before being turned over to the Army Air Forces for training pilots for combat missions over Europe and Asia. After World War II Camp Grayling was closed down and most of its buildings were demolished except for one building that now houses City Hall; another building that housed an armory still stands but is now used as storage; several other buildings have been converted into homes; one building that housed barracks still stands but has been converted into apartments; another building that housed offices now houses an auto body shop; several other buildings have been left vacant or are used for other purposes such as warehouses or garages; finally one large building that once served as an officers' club still stands but has been abandoned or partially occupied by squatters
