Harmony is a small town located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County.
The town was founded in 1856 and named for Harmony, Pennsylvania, the hometown of one of its founders. The first post office opened on July 16, 1856. The town's economy was based initially on agriculture and milling; by 1900 it had a sawmill, gristmill, two general stores, a blacksmith shop and a wagon shop. In 1907 the Minneapolis- Harmony Railroad opened through the town linking it with Minneapolis to the south and St Paul to the north.
In 1917 Harmony became home to Minnesota's first public school for African Americans when Howard University established an agricultural college there. In 1922 construction began on what would become Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM). MSUM moved from Harmony to Moorhead in 1928; however, many of Harmony's early buildings remain today as part of MSUM's campus including the original high school building which now houses MSUM's business department and student union building which now houses MSUM's theater department among other uses.
Today much of Harmony's economy revolves around education with several colleges and universities located in or near town including Concordia University- Moorhead (Concordia), Metropolitan State University-St Paul (MSU-St Paul), Augsburg College (Augsburg), Hamline University (Hamline) and William Mitchell College of Law (Mitchell). Additionally several private schools are located within close proximity including Blake School (Blake School), Bemidji Academy ( Bemidji Academy) Holy Family Catholic School (Holy Family Catholic School) and Northfield Mount Hermon School ( Northfield Mount Hermon School).
Real estate is an important part of Harmony's economy with many homes being built throughout the years both new construction as well as remodeling/updating existing homes into newer styles or adding onto them to create larger homes. Homes range from starter homes priced under $200K up into more expensive areas such as subdivisions near MSUM that can cost upwards of $1 million or more depending on size/location etc.. There is also a significant amount of rental housing available in harmony ranging from apartments all the way up to large single family homes that can accommodate families with children or multiple families depending on size etc..
