Red Wing is a small town located in the southwestern part of Minnesota. The population was 2,928 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Red Wing County. The town was founded in 1856 by settlers from New England and originally named "Winnibigosh". It was renamed " Red Wing" after the local red sandstone cliffs.

The economy of Red Wing is based on agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. Agriculture includes crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay; livestock includes pigs, cows, horses, and chickens; and fishing includes salmon runs in the nearby Mississippi River. Tourism is based on attractions such as the Red Wing Heritage Museum (founded in 1924), which features exhibits about local history; the National Historic Landmark District containing many historic buildings including several churches; and scenic drives such as Highway 61 which runs through town. Manufacturing includes furniture making (especially chairs), pottery production (including works by noted artist Dale Chihuly), textiles (including woolen goods), printing (including a newspaper), and metalworking (especially aircraft parts).

Real estate in Red Wing has been an important part of its economy for many years. The first commercial building in town was a general store built by Moses Chamberlain in 1856. By 1890 there were fifteen businesses operating in downtown Red Wing; most were related to retail sales or services related to commerce or industry. In 1906 a fire destroyed much of downtown but it quickly rebuilt with new brick buildings designed by architect George Wickersham who also designed other prominent buildings throughout Minnesota including Minneapolis' City Hall and St Paul's Cathedral).

In recent years real estate has become an even more important part of the economy with new construction outpacing older structures both downtown and throughout the community. According to data from Zillow®, between 2013-2017 there was an average of 1 new home being constructed per day within city limits while during that same period there were only 0 homes being demolished per day - indicating that more people are choosing to live in Red Wing rather than move away each year . This trend can be seen throughout Minnesota where communities like Duluth have seen dramatic increases in population over recent decades while others like Hastings have seen their populations decline due to migration out-of-state or out-of-towners buying homes specifically for rental purposes rather than living full time within their community boundaries .
