Wheaton is a small town located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The population of Wheaton was 17,814 as of the 2010 census. Wheaton is home to several businesses and organizations, including the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Saint John's University, and the Mayo Clinic. Wheaton is also home to many residential areas, including North Wheaton, East Wheaton, West Wheaton, and South Wheaton.
Wheaton has a long history as a farming community. In 1855, Charles Loring founded what would become known as Loring Park. The park was named for Dr. Charles Loring (1792-1864), an American physician who served in the Mexican-American War and later became the first medical director of the United States Army Medical Department.
Wheaton began to develop as a residential area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the homes in North Wheaton were built between 1910 and 1920; East Wheaton followed suit around 1930-1940; West Wheatoon began to develop in earnest after World War II; while South Wheato n saw its first development in the 1970s and 1980s.
