Utica, MS

Utica is a city located in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Utica is the county seat of Hinds County. The city is located on the north side of the Pearl River and is bordered by Rankin County to the east and northeast, Madison County to the south and southwest, and Copiah County to the west.

Utica was founded in 1836 as a trading post on what was then known as "The Natchez Trace." The city's name commemorates General James K. Polk's victory over Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. Utica became an incorporated town in 1871 and grew rapidly due to its location on one of America's most important transportation routes - The Natchez Trace Parkway - which opened in 1937.

Today, Utica remains an important commercial center with a diverse economy that includes agriculture (cotton), manufacturing (auto parts), health care (medical equipment), education (private schools), tourism (historic sites such as Fort Pillow National Monument) and retail sales (local businesses).
