Berkeley Heights is a township in Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 10,814,[11][12] reflecting an increase of 1,898 (+38.5%) from the 6,724 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,902 (+41.4%) from the 5,492 counted in the 1990 Census.[13]
The township was formed on March 12th 1798 as part of an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature that created twelve townships throughout New Jersey. The township was named for James Berkeley (1734-1804), 4th Earl of Berkeley and 1st Baron Botetourt.[14]
Berkeley Heights is located at 40°53′N 74°1′W (40.8700°N -74.0500°W). According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2), all land.[15]
