Clinton is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,819,[1][2] reflecting an increase of 511 (+5.4%) from the 8,912 counted in the 2000 Census.[3]

Clinton was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 7, 1894,[4] from portions of Mendham Township.[5] The borough derives its name from Clinton Township which was named for General James Clinton (1769-1828), a hero of the American Revolution and later Governor of New York.

Clinton is located at 40°6′N 74°51′W / 40.100°N 74.816°W / 40.100; -74.816 (40.1003,-74.8507). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.1 km2), all land.[6]

The Borough Council consists of five members who are elected at-large on a partisan basis to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis as part of the November general election in even-numbered years,[7][8] with one seat coming up for election each year as part of the November general election.[9][10][11][12] At an annual reorganization meeting held in January after each municipal election, council members are selected for two-year terms beginning on April 1 following that year's municipal election based upon seniority and whether they are running for re-election or not.[13][14][15]
