Edison was founded by George Washington Bridge builder and engineer Alfred T. Smith and his brother-in-law Samuel J. The first homes were built on what is now known as "The Hill" just south of Route 27 and west of Route 3 (the current location of Edison High School). The town grew rapidly with the construction of Route 27 in 1922 and became known as "The Crossroads of New Jersey".
