Middlesex is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 20,521,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,711 (+27.4%) from the 15,521 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,851 (+39.1%) from the 11,741 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]

The borough is located on both sides of Raritan Bay and includes portions of Edison and Woodbridge municipalities. The town center is at milepost 0.0 on Route 18 and includes a mix of residential neighborhoods as well as businesses and municipal buildings including police headquarters and firehouses.

The borough was formed on April 1, 1898 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Edison Township.[12][13] Middlesex Borough was named for Middlesex County,[14][15] which was named for England's county town Middlesex.[16][17] The borough has been governed under a council-manager form of government since November 6, 1978,[18] with Mayor Joseph DiVincenzo serving as both head of government and chief executive officer.[19][20][21]
