Hackettstown is home to the world's largest collection of Victorian era architecture and has been designated a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places.
The town was founded in 1798 by General James Hackett and named for him. The area was originally part of Rahway Township but became an independent municipality in 1894. The town grew rapidly after World War II as it became a bedroom community for people working in nearby Newark and Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. In recent years, Hackettstown has seen significant declines in population due to suburban sprawl and the effects of the Great Recession; however, it remains one of the most historic towns in New Jersey with many well-preserved Victorian-era homes.
Real estate is an important part of Hackettstown's economy. The town has a number of well-maintained Victorian-era homes that are popular among retirees and families looking for a small town atmosphere without the hustle and bustle of larger cities. There is also a growing demand for single family homes near schools and recreational areas. As such, real estate prices have increased significantly over the past few years; however, they remain relatively affordable when compared to other major metropolitan areas in New Jersey or elsewhere in America.
