Hamburg, NJ is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,919,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 711 (+5.4%) from the 10,372 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 1,711 (+12.5%) from the 9,827 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]

The borough was formed on April 12, 1898 as part of an effort to create municipalities throughout Bergen County following passage of the New Jersey Constitution of 1894 and an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 11, 1897.[12][13] The borough's name derives from Hamburg Township (now known as Harrison), which was named for Hamburg,[14][15] a small town in northern Germany.[16][17]

According to the United States Census Bureau, Hamburg has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.6 km2), all land.[18]
