The borough was formed on April 6, 1894 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Saddle River Township and Franklin Township. The borough's name is derived from its location high on a ridge overlooking both Saddle River and Hackensack Rivers. Highlands is home to many well-known businesses including Prudential Financial and American Express.
Highlands is located at 40°50′N 74°14′W (40.8019°N -74.2461°W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.7 square miles (6.9 km2), all land.
