Livingston is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,811,[10] reflecting an increase of 514 (+5.4%) from the 9,971 counted in the 2000 Census,[19] which had in turn increased by 1,724 (+12.1%) from the 8,362 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]

The borough was formed on April 12, 1899 as part of an act of the New Jersey Legislature[21] and named for Robert Livingston (1723-1806), who was then Governor of New York and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The borough's territory included what are now parts of Hackensack and Saddle River Township.[22][23][24][25][26]

In 1894 Livingston became home to what is now one of America's first shopping malls when The Ridgewood Mall opened on Ridgewood Avenue between Van Houten Avenue and Springfield Road.[27] In 1926 Ridgewood Park opened as a residential development on land that had been donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr., founder of Standard Oil.[28][29][30] The mall closed in 2001 but has since been redeveloped into apartments and retail space.[31][32]

According to Forbes magazine Livingston had an estimated median household income of $101,591 as of 2013,[33] making it one of the wealthiest municipalities in New Jersey.
