Mantua is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,564,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,711 (+36.2%) from the 6,851 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,539 (+54.1%) from the 4,971 counted in the 1990 Census.[11] Mantua was founded by Quaker settlers from New England in 1748 and became an incorporated borough on April 12, 1894.[12][13]
The borough is located about 10 miles (16 km) west of Newark and about 20 miles (32 km) east of Trenton. The boundaries are generally defined by U.S. Route 46 to the north and east; Interstate 80 to the south; and County Route 527 to the west.
According to Forbes magazine's 2009 list of America's Best Places To Live,[14] Mantua ranks as number two on its list of "America's Most Stressed-Out Cities". The magazine cites high levels of unemployment and foreclosure as well as a decline in property values as reasons for Mantua residents' stress levels. However according to Forbes Magazine there has been some improvement since 2009 with median home prices up over 60% since then.[15] Mantua also ranks first on NJBiz magazine’s “Top 100 Places To Work In New Jersey”[16], which cites a strong economy with low unemployment rates as one reason for this ranking.
