Marlboro is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town's population was 10,898,[1] reflecting an increase of 546 (+5.4%) from the 9,711 counted in the 2000 Census.[3]
The town is located about halfway between New York City and Philadelphia on Interstate 80. It is part of the larger metropolitan area known as Northern New Jersey and is home to many corporate headquarters including Johnson & Johnson and Prudential Financial. The boroughs of Marlboro Township and Rockaway Township are located within Marlboro Township.
The history of real estate in Marlboro dates back to 1785 when land was purchased by Nicholas Bayard from the Lenape Native Americans for use as a farmstead. In 1851, John Paulding bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) which would become known as Paulding Manor after his death in 1868. The first house built on this land was erected by Judge George Waring who lived there with his wife until their deaths in 1892 and 1898 respectively. Judge Waring had been appointed Chief Justice of New Jersey by President James K. Polk and had played a role in drafting the US Constitution at Philadelphia during the summer of 1787 while serving as Secretary to General George Washington at Valley Forge during the American Revolutionary War.
In 1893-94 Averell Harriman acquired 2200 acres (910 ha) for development into what would become known as Harriman State Park after his father Averell HARRIMAN who had been one of America’s richest men before dying suddenly at age 49 leaving an estate worth $100 million ($2 billion today). The first houses were built on this land by developers such as Jens Jensen who developed what became known as Jensen Beach which still exists today just south of Route 27 near where it intersects with County Road 516 (formerly County Road 616).[4]
In 1905-06 William Rockefeller Jr., son of Standard Oil co-founder John D Rockefeller Sr., acquired 3000 acres (1200 ha) for development into what would become known as Rockefeller Center after his father William Rockefeller Sr., who had died two years earlier leaving an estate worth $200 million ($4 billion today). The first houses were built on this land by developers such as Harry Helmsley who developed what became known Helmsley Park which still exists today just north east of Route 27 near where it intersects with County Road 516 (formerly County Road 616).[5]
In 1922-23 Walter Annenberg acquired 4000 acres (1550 ha) for development into what would become known as Sun Valley after his mother Alice Gertrude Annenberg whose family owned newspapers including The Philadelphia Inquirer.[6][7][8][9]
Today much of Marlboro remains undeveloped forest or open space providing residents with access to hiking trails, lakeside beaches and picturesque country estates such as those now owned by Donald Trump,[10][11][12][13] Woody Allen,[14] David Koch[15], Bill Gates[16], Michael Bloomberg[17], Oprah Winfrey[18], Steven Spielberg[19], Jeffrey Epstein[20], Jay Z [21] among others.[22][23][24].
