Montville is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,811,[10][11] reflecting an increase of 539 (+5.4%) from the 8,721 counted in the 2000 Census,[12] which had in turn increased by 1,972 (+14.1%) from the 7,527 counted in the 1990 Census.[13]

The borough was formed on April 10, 1894 as part of an act sponsored by then- Morris County Sheriff John F. Hartranft and approved by the New Jersey Legislature.[14][15] The borough derives its name from Montville Township,[16][17] which was named for General George Washington's Mount Vernon estate.[18][19]

Montville is located at (40.636902,-74.990901).[20] According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.[21]

As of the census[22] of 2000, there were 8,721 people, 3,311 households and 2,488 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,851.0 per square mile (708.3/km2).
