Vernon is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,912,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,564 (+22.4%) from the 7,868 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,711 (+36.2%) from the 6,624 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]

The borough was formed on April 10, 1894 as part of an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature that created five municipalities within Morris County: East Hanover Township (including what would become Vernon), Hanover Township (including what would become Mendham), Morristown Townships (including what would become Morris Plains and Mount Olive), and Rockaway Township (including what would become Rockaway). The Borough of Vernon was named for General James K. Polk,[12][13] who served as U.S. President from 1845 to 1849.[14][15]

According to the United States Census Bureau, Vernon has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10 km2), all land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 7,868 people, 3,073 households and 2,386 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,543.1 per square mile (590.4/km²). There were 3,291 housing units at an average density of 592.7 per square mile (229.3/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97% White , 1% African American , 0% Native American , 0% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0% from other races , and 1% from two or more races . Hispanic or Latino Of any race were 2%.

In 2000 there were 3707 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them
