Morris Plains is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 16,851,[9][10] reflecting an increase of 2,521 (+47.4%) from the 10,711 counted in the 2000 Census,[1] which had in turn increased by 1,848 (+39.2%) from the 8,664 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]
Morris Plains was incorporated as a town on April 14th 1798 and became a township on March 3rd 1894. The township was named for Colonel John Morriss who purchased land in what is now Morris Plains from Lord Berkeley in 1784.[12][13]
The borough of Morris Plains borders East Hanover Township to the north and west; Mount Olive Township to the east; and Union City to the south. Interstate 78 traverses Morris Plains at its eastern edge with access from Exit 9 (Route 3) near milepost 116.[14][15]
