Union City is a borough in Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 20,913,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,569 (+11.4%) from the 19,719 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,824 (+27.3%) from the 15,539 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]
Union City is located at 40°4′N 74°21′W (40.7000°N -74.3500°W). According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 3.1 square miles (8.2 km2), all of which is land.[12]
The Borough Council consists of five members who are elected at-large on a partisan basis to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis as part of the November general election in even-numbered years as part of the General Municipal Election Law,[13][14][15] with one seat coming up for election each year as part of the November general election.[16][17] At an annual reorganization meeting held after each municipal election on or before May 1st,[18], one seat on council becomes vacant and is filled by appointment from among its members for a two-year term concurrent with that of their elected office.[19][20] The Borough President appoints all other members including those who have served their terms and vacated their seats prior to May 1st.[21][22]
