Newton is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town's population was 20,872,[1] reflecting an increase of 1,711 (+14.2%) from the 18,527 counted in the 2000 Census.[4]
Newton was founded by Reverend John Newton in 1748 and named for his friend and benefactor General George Washington. The town was incorporated as a borough on April 10, 1894[5] from portions of Bound Brook Township,[6][7] based on the results of a referendum held that same day.[8][9] It became a city on January 1, 1926,[10][11] based on the results of another referendum held that same day.[12][13]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.0 square miles (23 km2), all land.[14]
