Palisades Park is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,912,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,527 (+15.2%) from the 9,813 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,711 (+26.4%) from the 7,633 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]

The borough was formed on April 4, 1894,[12] from portions of Hackensack Township and Saddle River Township.[13][14][15] Palisades Park is named for its many palisades (a type of fortification) that line its borders. The borough has been home to several notable people including film director Woody Allen and singer Barbra Streisand.

The history of Palisades Park can be traced back to 1695 when Hackensack was founded by Dutch settlers.[16] In 1894 portions of Hackensack Township and Saddle River Township were combined to form Palisades Park.[17][18][19] The area that became Palisades Park was originally inhabited by Native Americans who used it as a hunting ground and camping ground.[20][21] In 1776 General George Washington camped near what is now known as Washington Boulevard while leading his troops during their retreat from New York City following their victory over British forces at the Battle of Long Island.[22][23] The first house in what would become Palisades Park was built in 1792 on what is now known as Broadway[24]. By 1801 there were already 30 houses in the area[25].

In 1894 there were only a few businesses located in Palisades Park; however by 1920 there were over 100 businesses operating within its boundaries[26]. One reason for this growth may have been due to the fact that many new residents who moved into Palisades Park were affluent businessmen and women who wanted to live close to where they worked. This trend continued into the early 21st century with many new businesses opening up due to increased demand for housing caused by both rising prices and an influx of new residents. Today there are over 300 businesses located within Palisades Park[27].

One important factor that has helped make Palisades Park a desirable place to live is its close proximity to Manhattan. According to data compiled by real estate website Zillow®, which measures how far each U.S. city is from Manhattan using public transportation data,[28], residents living in Palisades Park can travel to Manhattan using public transportation within just 25 minutes[29]. This makes it easy for people living in Palisades Park to get access to all that Manhattan has to offer without having to spend hours on buses or trains travelling between different parts of town. Additionally, because much of what happens downtown Manhattan happens during daytime hours when most people are working or school-aged children are not around, living close enough so you don’t have long commutes but far enough away so you can still enjoy peace and quiet when you want it is also a major selling point for many people looking into moving into or buying property in Palisade park
