Piscataway is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 10,816,[9][10] reflecting an increase of 1,521 (+14.4%) from the 9,711 counted in the 2000 Census,[19] which had in turn increased by 2,829 (+41.1%) from the 6,624 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]
The township was formed on April 1, 1798 as part of an act of the New Jersey Legislature to replace Piscataway Township which had been created on February 21, 1788 from portions of Elizabeth and Monmouth counties.[21][22] The township was named for John Paul Jones,[23][24] who served as a captain in the American Revolutionary War and later became a naval hero during the French Revolutionary Wars.
According to The Daily Record newspaper (owned by Gannett),[25] " Piscataway Township is one of New Jersey's most diverse communities with people representing more than 120 countries living here."[26][27][28][29] According to Piscataway Township officials' estimates released in early 2006,[30] about 60% of residents are white; 18% are black or African American; 8% are Asian; 4% are Hispanic or Latino; and 3% are other races. There were also about 2% who reported two or more races.[30][31]:3
