South River is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,876,[10][11] reflecting an increase of 524 (+5.4%) from the 9,269 counted in the 2000 Census,[12] which had in turn increased by 1,715 (+14.1%) from the 7,927 counted in the 1990 Census.[13]
The borough was formed on April 1, 1894 as an outgrowth of South Amboy Township,[14] and was named for its location on both South River and Raritan Bays.[15][16][17] The borough's first mayor was James J. Byrne.[18]
South River is located at (40.868851,-74.005902).[19] According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.6 km2), all land.[20]
