Farmingdale, NY

Farmingdale is a suburban town located in Nassau County, New York. The population was 106,814 at the 2010 census. Farmingdale is the most populous town in Nassau County and the second most populous town on Long Island after New York City.

The area that now comprises Farmingdale was first settled by Europeans in 1640 as part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The community was named for Philip Schuyler, a general in the American Revolutionary War who had been Governor General of New Netherland. In 1809, part of what is now Farmingdale became part of the Town of Hempstead. In 1834, Hempstead separated from Town of Hempstead and became an independent municipality. The remainder of what is now Farmingdale became part of the Town of North Hempstead in 1850.

In 1870, a group led by John Dixson purchased 640 acres (2 km²) from North Hempstead to form a new town to be called Dix Hills after his son-in-law George W. Dixson who had died two years earlier while serving as Mayor of Brooklyn Heights (now Downtown Brooklyn). The name "Dix Hills" was changed to " Farmingdale" in 1873 when it was incorporated as a village with 500 residents. On April 15, 1906, Farmingdale officially became a city with 10,000 residents and 125 businesses.

The development and growth of Farmingdale has been spurred by its location on Long Island's eastern coast within easy commuting distance to both Manhattan and Queens; its proximity to various shopping areas such as Garden City Center mall; its excellent public schools; its low crime rate; and its many recreational opportunities including golf courses, beaches and parks which are open year-round due to prevailing northeasterly winds off Long Island Sound providing moderate temperatures year-round without extremes such as high humidity or cold weather conditions typical on other parts of Long Island during winter months when outdoor activities are not possible or desirable due to ice or snow cover which can severely limit access to roads or sidewalks for pedestrians or bicyclists respectively making them vulnerable to accidents especially if they are not properly dressed for cold weather conditions).

Accordingly since 2000 there has been significant investment activity in residential construction both single family homes as well as apartments which have helped make Farmingdale one of the fastest growing municipalities on Long Island both in terms of population growth rate (which has averaged over 2% per year over past decade) but also employment growth rate (which has averaged over 2% per year over past decade).
