Huntington Station is a suburban community located in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, New York. The population was 41,837 at the 2010 census.
The area that is now Huntington Station was first settled in the mid-18th century by Dutch and English settlers. The village of Huntington was incorporated in 1853 and became a town in 1872. The area that is now Huntington Station was part of the original town of Huntington.
The village of Huntington grew rapidly after the opening of the Long Island Rail Road in 1873. Many wealthy families moved to the village to enjoy its peaceful rural setting and proximity to Manhattan. By 1900, there were over 1,000 homes and businesses in Huntington Village.
Huntington Village remained an important commercial center until after World War II when suburbanization began to take hold on Long Island. Many businesses closed their doors and residents began moving out into new neighborhoods such as Westbury, Roslyn Heights, East Hampton, Southampton and Babylon.
Today, much has changed since those early days when people enjoyed walking or riding their horses through town or shopping at local stores such as Woolworths or Kresge's Department Store. Today's residents enjoy many amenities available only within close proximity to a major city – including world-class shopping malls like The Promenade at Port Jefferson Center and numerous restaurants – all while maintaining a peaceful rural atmosphere reminiscent of days gone by.
