The Changing Face of Inwood: Home Prices and Trends

Inwood is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan, New York City. It is located in the northwest corner of the city, bounded by West 155th Street to the north, Broadway to the east, Amsterdam Avenue to the south and Inwood Hill Park to the west. The area was originally part of Westchester County but became part of New York City in 1898.

The name " Inwood" comes from a tract of land on which Inwood House was built in 1796 by Nicholas Bayard and his wife Margaret (née Livingston). The house was later acquired by Aaron Burr and used as his country residence until he fled after being charged with treason in 1807. After Burr's death, Inwood remained uninhabited for many years until it was purchased by George Washington Vanderbilt II in 1895. He extensively renovated it and used it as his primary residence until his death in 1919. Today, much of Inwood remains undeveloped open space with a few small businesses scattered throughout its streets.

Real estate prices vary greatly depending on location within Inwood; however, most homes are priced between $1 million and $5 million. There are also a number of high-end apartments available for purchase or rent ranging from $2 million to $8 million per year.

The majority of residents are white collar professionals who work downtown or at one of Manhattan's many corporate headquarters located nearby such as Rockefeller Center or Madison Square Garden. However, there is also a significant population of lower-income families who reside here due to its proximity to public transportation (the A train stops at 157th Street), affordable housing options and excellent schools ( Inwood has some of the best public schools in Manhattan).

As one would expect with any densely populated urban area such as Manhattan, crime rates are high particularly during night time hours when criminals target those who are out at night drinking or engaging in other activities that may lead to criminal activity such as fighting or vandalism. Nevertheless, overall crime rates have decreased significantly over recent years thanks largely to aggressive policing strategies implemented by local law enforcement agencies working together with community groups dedicated to reducing crime rates within Inwood
