Islip Terrace, NY

Islip Terrace is a small town located in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Smithtown- Islip- Bay Shore Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town was first settled around 1795 by Nicholas and Catherine (Kane) Islip. They were followed by other families who established farms and businesses in what would become Islip Terrace. The first schoolhouse was built in 1811 and a post office opened in 1812.

In 1892, the railroad came to Islip Terrace and began to spur development along its tracks. Many new homes were built for railroad employees and their families. In 1916, a fire destroyed much of downtown Islip Terrace; however, it was quickly rebuilt with more brick buildings. By 1920, there were over 1,000 residents living in the town.

Today, much of downtown remains intact with many historic buildings still standing including the train station (now used as a community center), post office (now used as a library), churches (St Luke's Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church), stores (Baxter's Drug Store and Goudreau's Department Store), banks ( Islip Savings Bank and Suffolk County National Bank), schools ( Islip Union Free School District) and homes (many dating back to the late 1800s).

The economy of Islip Terrace is based largely on tourism with visitors coming for its beaches - which are known for their calm waters - as well as its historical sites such as Fort Totten Military Reservation which is home to several museums including Fort Totten State Historic Site Museum which tells the story of Long Island's military history from 1614 until today). There are also several golf courses located nearby including Fox Hollow Golf Club which has been open since 1898
