New Hyde Park, NY

New Hyde Park is a suburban town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 17,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Neck area.

The Town of New Hyde Park was incorporated on April 24th, 1896 from portions of the Town of North Hempstead and the Village of East Hampton. The name commemorates Thomas Hyde (1792-1865), an American politician and diplomat who served as U.S. Minister to Russia from 1836 to 1841 and U.S. Ambassador to Prussia from 1842 to 1845; he also served as a U.S Senator from New York from 1850 until his death in 1865.

The Town's first settler was Ebenezer Chapin (1796-1868), who arrived in December of 1840 with his wife Sarah Ann and four children: Edwin Chapin (1816-1894), Eliza Chapin (baptized July 10th, 1820 - d/o Ebenezer & Sarah Ann Chapin), Caroline Chapin (baptized November 9th, 1824 - d/o Ebenezer & Sarah Ann Chapin) and George Washington Chapin (baptized February 22nd, 1830 - d/o Ebenezer & Sarah Ann Chapin).

In 1870 there were only about 100 people living in what would become the Town of New Hyde Park; by 1890 that number had increased to 1,500 residents and by 1940 it had reached its present size of 17,812 residents!
