Summit is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the White Plains– Armonk– Monsey Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town of Summit was first settled around 1798 by John and Sarah (née Smith) Burr and their families. They purchased land from the Mohawk Indians on the north side of the Hudson River from what is now Tarrytown to Yonkers. The Burr family built a mill on Mill Creek near where it flows into the Hudson River and began producing flour, lumber, and other goods for sale in nearby towns. In 1821, John Burr's son-in-law David Silliman founded Yale College in New Haven, Connecticut; as a result of this connection Yale donated land to establish a college in Summit which became known as Silliman College after its benefactor.
In 1847 Samuel Morse built his first telegraph line between Washington D.C., New York City and Albany; as a result he received an honorary degree from Yale University in 1848 which helped promote tourism to Summit during that era. In 1870 local businessmen formed the Village Improvement Company with the goal of improving conditions for businesses and residents within the village limits; this organization later became known as The Summit Civic Association (TSCA).
In 1896 George Eastman founded Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York; as a result he donated money to build an elementary school which became known as Eastman School after its benefactor. In 1924 TSCA purchased land on Route 9W south of Route 202 for use as a park which was named after George Eastman following his death that year; today this park is known locally as "Eastman Park".
During World War II many men enlisted or were drafted into military service; as a result there was an increase in housing construction within Summit during that time period including single family homes, apartments complexes, and hotels/motels. After World War II ended there was another surge in housing construction including suburbanization of older neighborhoods within town along with new development along major transportation corridors such as Routes 9W and 202/287 (the Saw Mill Parkway).
In recent years there has been an increase in residential development outside of town along major roadways such as I-287 (the Saw Mill Parkway) and Route 9W although some redevelopment has taken place within town including rehabilitation projects at several older buildings such as Silliman College (formerly Eastman School) which now houses offices for Town government services such as zoning hearings etc.; additionally several new commercial properties have been constructed or are currently under construction within downtown Summit including two high-rise office buildings – One Chase Manhattan Plaza located at 200 North Broadway while another building – One Beacon Place – is located adjacent to it at 201 North Broadway both buildings are owned by JLL who also manages both properties
