Valley Stream, NY

Valley Stream is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 33,521 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is located on the eastern border of Long Island and is bisected by the Great South Bay.

The area that would become Valley Stream was first settled in 1653 as part of the Town of Hempstead. The town's name was derived from its location along a valley between two hills (Valley Brook). In 1873, portions of what would become Valley Stream were annexed by neighboring East Meadow and Westbury. In 1922, when Long Island Rail Road established its Main Line through eastern Nassau County, Valley Stream became an important railway junction and commercial center.

The opening of the Garden State Parkway in 1956 led to an influx of commuters into Valley Stream from nearby New York City suburbs such as Woodmere and Glen Oaks. This growth has continued into the 21st century; according to The Real Estate Board of New York City data for October 2016, median sales prices for single-family homes in Valley Stream were $1 million or more than three times greater than those for all housing types combined within a one-mile radius (median sales price: $10 million).
