Woodhaven was first settled in 1853 by Irish immigrants who had come to America seeking a better life. The area was originally known as "Irishtown." In 1884, it became part of Queens County and was renamed " Woodhaven." The name is derived from a wooded area that once stood near the present-day intersection of Northern Boulevard and Yellowstone Road.
The early years of Woodhaven were marked by rapid growth as new families arrived from Ireland and other parts of Europe. By 1900, Woodhaven had a population of 10,000 people. The community's fortunes changed dramatically with the onset of World War I. Many young men enlisted to fight in Europe and never returned home. This led to an economic decline in Woodhaven that lasted for many years.
However, by the late 1940s and early 1950s, things had started to change for the better in Woodhaven. The community's economy began to rebound thanks to new housing developments being built on large tracts of land that had been left vacant after World War II. This period also saw an influx of Jewish families who were fleeing persecution in Europe. Today, Woodhaven is one of the most diverse communities in Queens County with a population that includes people from all over the world
