Woodside has a long history dating back to 1640 when Dutch settlers first settled in what is now known as Woodside. The town was originally called " Westerlo" after Westerlo, Netherlands. In 1871, the Town of Hempstead was formed from portions of Woodside and Westbury and in 1898 it became an independent municipality.
