The city of Henderson was founded in 1892 by J.B. Henderson and his brother-in-law A.C. Moore as a cotton mill town on the banks of the Catawba River near its confluence with the Haw River. The town was named for General James Henderickson, a hero of the Mexican–American War and one of North Carolina's first U.S Senators (1850-1853). In 1907, Henderson became an incorporated city with a population of 2,500 people; it reached its present population in 1930 as cotton mills were replaced by automobile factories and other businesses that depended on road transportation to get their products to market.
