Lake Junaluska is a beautiful place to live, work, and play. The area has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when Cherokee Indians inhabited the area. In 1868, General William T. Sherman passed through the area on his way to burn Atlanta. After Sherman's march, settlers began moving into the area and by 1887, Junaluska had a post office and was officially incorporated as a town.
Today, Lake Junaluska is home to approximately 2,000 residents who enjoy its natural beauty and proximity to Asheville and Charlotte. The town is served by two schools - Lake Junaluska Elementary School and Lake Junaluska Middle School - as well as several businesses including a grocery store, gas station/convenience store, bank branch, pharmacy, salon/spa, hardware store and several restaurants including The Boil & Bite Cafe & Bakery (located in an old train depot), Wingate's Pizza (formerly known as Mama Mia's Pizza), BurgerFi (an American-style fast food restaurant) and Wildflower Cafe (a locally-owned vegetarian restaurant). There are also several parks including Memorial Park with its playgrounds and tennis courts; Greenbrier Park with its hiking trails; Deer Park with its fishing pond; Heritage Park with its baseball diamond; Mountain View Cemetery;and Hillcrest Cemetery which features an interesting mausoleum built in 1895 that was once used as a mortuary for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.
