The city of Linden was founded in 1892 by Dr. J.W.L. McNair and James Larkin, Jr., who were both cotton farmers from Rutherford County, North Carolina. The two men decided to move their families to Linden because of its favorable location between Charlotte and Rutherford County, as well as its proximity to the Yadkin River which provided power for mills and factories in both cities.
