New Bern, NC

New Bern is a city located in Craven County, North Carolina. The population was 24,814 as of the 2010 census. New Bern is the county seat of Craven County.

The city was founded in 1752 by General James Moore and named for his friend, Sir William Bernard Baronet, 3rd Baronet of Newbury in Berkshire, England. The town was originally situated on the north bank of the Trent River but was moved to its present location due to flooding. In 1821, New Bern became the first municipality in North Carolina to be incorporated under a charter from the state legislature.

New Bern is known for its architecture and historic districts such as Courthouse Square and Market Street which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown area has been designated a National Historic Landmark District and features many notable buildings including the Craven County Courthouse (1824), First Baptist Church (1820), Masonic Temple (1892), and Odd Fellows Hall (c. 1875). Other popular tourist destinations include Fort Dobbs State Park which features a reconstructed fort dating back to 1755, Lighthouse Point which offers stunning views of Cape Hatteras and Morehead City from atop Lookout Hill, and White Oak Swamp Wildlife Preserve which offers hiking trails through cypress swamps and oak-hickory forests.
