The town was founded in 1796 by James and John Shelby, brothers who were early pioneers in the area. The town was named for General Henry Knox, who helped finance its founding. The first settler in Shelby was William Anderson, who arrived in 1798.
The town's economy has been based largely on agriculture and manufacturing; however, since the late 1990s there has been a resurgence in real estate development as well as other economic sectors due to increased job opportunities and growth within the region.
