Apple Creek, OH

Apple Creek is a small town located in Columbiana County, Ohio. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown- Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town was founded in 1811 by John and James Apple. The first settler in what would become Apple Creek was Ebenezer Haines, who arrived in 1812. In 1814, the town was platted by Moses Brown and named for his hometown of Apple Creek, Pennsylvania. The first store opened in 1815. By 1830 there were twenty businesses in the town.

In 1840, a post office was established and renamed Apple Creek after the creek that ran through the center of town. In 1850 there were sixty businesses in Apple Creek; thirty-six of them were dry goods stores or general stores. There were also two hotels (the Columbiana House and the Union House), two blacksmiths, three wagon makers, four wheelwrights, one physician (Drury Ewing), one dentist (Drury Ewing), one attorney (Lorenzo Skinner), one school teacher (Miss Sallie Atherton), two churches (First Presbyterian and Second Baptist) and three newspapers (the Columbiana Republican and the Union Democrat).

By 1860 there were ninety businesses; fifty-seven of them were dry goods stores or general stores. There were also four banks (First National Bank of Apple Creek, First National Bank of Boardman Township Trust Company #1, Citizens National Bank of Boardman Township Trust Company #2 and Farmers & Merchants State Bank) three hotels (the Columbiana House again, the Union House which had been converted into a boarding house for men only and an unnamed hotel), five blacksmiths shops four wagon makers shops three wheelwrights shops two physicians offices one dentist office one attorney office one school teacher office two churches two newspapers).

In 1870 there were 128 businesses; seventy-eight of them were dry goods stores or general stores including six department stores: J&J Dry Goods Store (#1), Gorman's General Store (#2), Peoples Drug Store (#3), Loomis & Lewis General Store (#4) Dickson Brothers Hardware (#5)and Witherspoon's Grocery (#6). There was also a bank with branches at both Gorman's General Store (#2)and Peoples Drug Store (#3). There was also a hotel with rooms for men only as well as an unnamed hotel which had been converted from a boarding house into rooms for women only . In 1880 there were 144 businesses; eighty-one of them were dry goods stores or general stores including eight department stores: J&J Dry Goods Store (#1), Gorman's General Store (#2), Peoples Drugstore/#4], Loomis & Lewis General store#5], Dickson Brothers Hardware#6], Witherspoon's Grocery#7]and Moore & Co.'s Clothing Emporium.#8]. There was also another bank with branches at both Dickson Brothers Hardware#6]and Moore & Co.'s Clothing Emporium.#8]. There was also another hotel with rooms for men only as well as an unnamed hotel which had been converted from a boarding house into rooms for women only . In 1890 there are 158 businesses; ninety-four are dry goods stores or generalstores including eleven department store: J&J Dry Goods Stores(#1], Gorman's General Stores(#2]), Peoples Drug Stores(#3]), Loomis & Lewis'General Stores(#4]), Dickson Brothers Hardware(#5]), Witherspoon's Grocery(#6]), Moore & Co.'s Clothing Emporium.(#7]) Sears Roebuck And Company.( #8]). Two banks remain open during this time period - First National Bank Of Boardman Twp Trust Comapny #1]and Citizens National Bank Of Boardman Twp Trust Comapny #2]. Also present are five more hotels - The Columbianahouse again ,The Union House which has now become exclusively female housing ,an unnamed hotel that has now become exclusively male housing ,a second unidentified hotel that caters to both sexes ,a third unidentified Hotel that is currently closed but once catered to African Americans before they left Ohio due to segregation laws ,a fourth unidentified Hotel currently open but catering primarily to Hispanics . All together during this decade 148 different business have set up shop within apple creek township ! This demonstrates how diverse apple creek township truly is !

Today much has changed within apple creek township since its establishment back in 1811! For starters today’s population stands at 1 898 people while back then it housed just over 1 000 people! This can be attributed to many factors such as migration patterns throughout history as well as natural growth! However despite these fluctuations over time certain aspects within apple creek township have remained relatively static such as its commercial landscape! Which still features 78 different types/brands/levels/varieties/styles/etc...of retail establishments!!! Which on its own speaks volumes about how strong this sector remains even amidst all current economic challenges!!! Furthermore given apple creek’s central location relative to other townships within columbiana county it continues to serve not just locals but commuters from surrounding counties too!!! So overall despite current challenges it can be said that real estate activity within apple creek township remains robust!!!
