Barnesville is a small town located in Stark County, Ohio. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Canton- Massillon Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town of Barnesville was founded in 1812 by John and Sarah ( Barton) Barnesville. The first settler in the area was Ebenezer Barton, who built a cabin on what is now known as Barton Hill. The town grew slowly at first, but began to prosper after the arrival of the railroad in 1853. By 1900, Barnesville had a population of 1,500 and boasted several businesses including a flour mill and a blacksmith shop.
Today, Barnesville remains an agricultural community with many farms and businesses located along Route 33. However, the town has seen significant growth over the past few years due to its proximity to Cleveland and Canton/ Massillon. Several new businesses have opened including a fitness center, an ice cream shop, and a hair salon. In addition, several new homes have been built in recent years which has helped to revitalize the downtown area.
