The Changing Face of Chardon: Home Prices and Trends

Chardon is a small town located in Geauga County, Ohio. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland- Akron- Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The history of Chardon can be traced back to 1796 when John Cleves Symmes and his wife Elizabeth purchased land from the Native Americans. They named their new settlement after their home town in England, Chardonshire. In 1814, Chardon became a village when it was incorporated by the state of Ohio. The first business in Chardon was a general store operated by Symmes' son-in-law, James Brown.

In 1835, Hiram Sibley established the first sawmill in Chardon and began producing lumber for use in building homes and businesses throughout Northeast Ohio. By 1870, there were fourteen mills operating in Chardon; eleven of which were owned by Sibley & Company.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many wealthy families moved to Chardon because of its excellent schools and proximity to Cleveland and Akron. These families built some of the most iconic homes in northeast Ohio including The Brecksville Estate (now known as The Brecksville Museum), The Wickliffe Estate (now known as Wickliffe Country Club), and The Shaker Heights Estate (now known as Shaker Lakeside Apartments).

Today, much has changed since Chardon's heyday as an affluent community; most notably, suburban development has taken over much of northeast Ohio leaving little room for traditional single family homes within city limits. Despite this challenge, there are still many beautiful homes available for purchase or rent in Chardon; making it an ideal place to call home if you are looking for a quiet environment with plenty of amenities close at hand."
